Kelly Ann Scott Named VP, Content at Alabama Media Group

Award-winning newsroom leader Kelly Ann Scott of Reno, Nevada has been named vice president of content at AL.com / Alabama Media Group, the nationally recognized statewide news operation based in Birmingham, AL.

Scott joins AL.com directly from her role as executive editor for RGJ Media, part of the USA Today Network, where she set strategy for all editorial products, including RGJ.com, related social channels, the print edition of the Reno Gazette Journal, Reno.com, and Reno Magazine. She was also recently been named state director for USA Today properties in Nevada, Utah and Guam.

Kelly joined RGJ Media in 2005 as assistant city editor, and then led political and investigative journalism coverage before moving up to executive editor in 2013. Under her leadership the RCJ editorial team has launched new products and has won multiple state and industry press awards. A graduate of University of Nebraska with a master’s degree from St. Cloud University, she brings 20 years’ journalism experience with focus on news and public service. A passionate advocate for the power of local journalism to impact communities, she has taught multimedia reporting at University of Nevada and serves on the board of the Nevada Press Association.

In Alabama, Scott will direct the statewide news journalism and operations at AL.com, the social video news brand Reckon by AL.com, and many of the company’s social channels, reporting to company president Tom Bates.

This appointment was made as Michelle Holmes is promoted to the new position of head of partnerships where she will drive content innovation initiatives and oversee the company’s fast-growing non-news initiatives such as RedClay Media, producer of social video brands including “This is Alabama” and “It’s a Southern Thing”. As VP Content since 2013, Holmes’ leadership has established the AL.com as among the most innovative and progressive local newsrooms in the country.

Alabama Media Group, based in Birmingham, is a division of Advance Local, one of the nation’s leading local media companies, reaching more than 48 million consumers through digital and print brands in markets across the country.
