VP Content/ Editor Named at The Oregonian
Following a national search conducted on behalf of the company by Cara Erickson of NewCoordinates, LLC, The Oregonian/OregonLive has announced the appointment of Laura Gunderson as its new Editor and VP, Content. In this capacity, Laura will lead the 65+-person newsroom, reporting to John Maher, President of Oregonian Media Group. Laura succeeds Therese Bottomley, who announced her retirement several months ago and leaves The Oregonian on August 1 after a a distinguished 40-year career in newsroom management.
Laura was previously Managing Editor for News and has also led the Editorial/Opinion pages, the first woman to hold that position. A Portland native, she literally grew up with the Oregonian, and as the granddaughter of two Oregonian editors! She has spent her career since college working in a range of reporting and editing roles in the newsroom, and has played a key role in The Oregonian’s evolution and transformation as a leading local digital news operation.
In announcing her appointment, Maher said, “Laura’s natural leadership, strategic clarity, and deep experience across the newsroom make her the right leader for this moment. Her commitment to public interest journalism and community engagement will be vital as we navigate the challenges ahead.”
